Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board

The Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Whakatāne District Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of seven members: six members elected by voters, and one councillor from the Whakatāne District Council.  This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Educate people to pick up their dog mess, and encourage better dog behaviour.

Implement more education on recycling that is realistic and practical.

Encourage council to clean road signs and location signs.

  • Communicate the views on utilities and services of the Whakatāne-Ōhope community directly to council.

Encourage council to investigate and implement options for food waste collection services.

  • Input regularly on by-law reviews initiated by council.

Listen to local ratepayers on issues affecting them and feed back to council.

  • More signage and better efforts are needed to minimise waste. Again, research better manageable waste incentives for our public.

I support Three Waters to minimise costs being passed on to ratepayers. Centralising costs will minimise the costs.

Make street clearing a community responsibility - promotes community spirit and pride. Bring back the best street awards I say.
