Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board

The Whakatāne-Ōhope Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Whakatāne District Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of seven members: six members elected by voters, and one councillor from the Whakatāne District Council.  This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Support the regional council and their coast care.

    Support The Kiwi Trust and Halo to continue to establish the kiwi capital status we have, and become predator free where kiwi roam.

    Establish a forum where the community can learn on a regular basis about the benefits of waste minimisation.

  • Support tangata whenua in designing and leading environmental projects and policy development in regards to the environment.

    Build and maintain relationships with local environment groups and organisations with a view to strengthening community-council connections.

    Encourage the development of local initiatives that enhance green spaces in ALL of our neighborhoods.

  • Water needs to be protected from overseas investment. Water use needs to have stricter regulations.

    More of a focused effort needs to be directed at pest control. Creates employment for our local economy and protects biodiversity.

    Use circular economy more. More public education around minimising household waste.

  • Promote and encourage waste minimisation through local businesses and community groups such as Waste Zero Whakatāne.

  • Encourage and promote recycling and waste reduction.

    Collaborate with Waste Zero Whakatāne to support their initiatives to reduce household and business waste.
