Climate change and resilience

Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Encourage recycling.

Encourage cycling and walking. Improve bus services.

    Grow more trees and gardens.

  • Advocate for council to be actively making bold decisions on climate change adaptation and mitigation.

  • Ensure that climate change is a priority in all decision-making that affects our community.

Support evidence-based policy and planning decisions so that we can continue to thrive in an uncertain climate future.

Be a vocal advocate for groups and initiatives that are working in our community to improve our preparedness for climate change.

  • Continue to work with the Active Whakatāne Strategy and establish more cycle pathways and shared walking cycling spaces.

Encourage people to recycle and use less fossil fuels to heat, cook and as transport methods.

Encourage council to establish an education programme for the local schools to reinforce the values of respecting the environment.
