Mayor of Whangārei

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Whangarei District Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I believe council has inhumane policies that can change. Example development contributions for granny flats which can be up to $25,000. Often elderly people have to live with their families, and this cost is crushing. In desperation, people are forced to do this regardless and live in fear of being prosecuted by council. Families looking after families should not live in fear. Same for young families caught in rent traps – they need family help.

About me

I have 20 years experience working for council, and I have sound operational knowledge of how it works, and how it doesn't. I may have helped you out in the past. I believe in people, families, communities and environment. It is wrong for someone to work 40 hours a week and live in poverty and I have the knowledge and experience to improve people's lives.

My priorities
  1. Free parking for anyone with a disability. We already do this for those aged over 70.
  2. Help with cost of living. My public transport schemes will reduce household transport costs.
  3. Remove barriers to families helping families and communities helping communities.
