Mayor of Whangārei

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the district and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Whangarei District Council mayoral election.

Environment

Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Ensure our three waters infrastructure and long term maintenance plan remain ahead of growth trends for the district.

Introduce an environmental rubbish system (following Tauranga council's initiative) which has halved the amount sent to landfill.

Commit to protection of individual fish quota for our domestic fishermen and women. Stop commercialisation of inner shore fishing.

  • Allow for subdivision of land – one hectare every ten years. Subject to planting or preserving existing native vegetation.

Individual (property) ratepayer-funded pest and weed control – no dogs, cats or mustelid. 25% protected native bush either new or planted.

One thousand properties would result in 250 hectares of land that otherwise would not be kiwi protected.

  • Council has a role to do no harm to the environment.

I will be making sure that all council infrastructure can be clearly identified and measured against risk to the environment.

  • With my farming background, I know there are concerns about the future of our environment.

We need to make sure our own backyard is clean, then work with agencies to address identified problems.

I want to create a mayoral task force to focus on environmental issues, as happens in other cities.

  • Create floating community food gardens to naturally improve water health and quality as well as provide free food to those in need.

Engage with the community to find new, green, innovative solutions to waste disposal, recycling and rubbish dumping charges.

Advocate to keep our water management and build co-governance with iwi and hapū on a local level.
