Whangārei Urban General Ward
The Whangārei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Whangārei Urban ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Reduce red tape on the building consent process to speed up building times and reduce costs to homeowners and developers.

    Rezone land and build cheaper two and three-bedroom temporary accommodation as a pathway for people to transition into permanent housing.

    Look into rezoning the inner city area to allow for inner city apartments in shops to increase CBD use and reduce housing shortages.

  • Establish WDC policy environment where small secondary dwellings/tiny houses can be established without attracting development contributions.

    Support the inner-city urban renewal project and encourage inner-city dwelling/amenity. Investigate car-free weekends for the CBD.

    Support the Housing Strategy and work with partners to implement excellent social housing in Whangārei District.
