Whangārei Urban General Ward
The Whangārei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Whangārei Urban ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Work with Northland Emergency Services Trust, WhatuOra, ACC, mana whenua for a long-term rescue heliport that is not in anyone's back yard.

    Support passenger rail connection to Auckland and rail link to Marsden Point. Fast, frequent and free public transport (buses)!

    Support implementation of Walking and Cycling Strategy – prioritise funding where mode shift from cars can be achieved.

  • Investigating the possibility of passenger rail to and from Auckland.

    Fixing roading connecting our rural communities to town.

    Re-evaluating the pros and cons of e-scooters.

  • Complete the shared path walk and cycleway projects throughout the city.

    Build more arterial roads to improve traffic flow.

    Electrify the bus fleet.

  • Join up walking and cycle tracks more quickly by collaborating with local communities.

    Move to free and frequent public transport. Reduce the size of buses.

    Increase sealing of dusty metal roads.

  • Make a decision on the airport and start putting infrastructure in place for it now from roading upgrades to services to the land.

    Make public transport more available by running more services, look at hours they run and hold businesses liable for missed services.

    Fix the potholes when they occur, seal roads in summer, hold contractors liable for the roads they fix and go for better jobs not cheaper.

  • Support expanding and finishing the shared pathway around the district to provide safe alternative access.

    Improve and create more safe pedestrian spaces, road crossings and disabled accessibility which benefits all.

    Support alternative parking locations to utilise premium public space while ensuring parking at a reasonable proximity to destinations.

  • Encourage transport companies to branch their businesses into Whangārei.

    Redesign transport infrastructure to make improve the flow of traffic and the quality of our roads.

    Create more walking and cycling tracks to reduce the need to drive.

  • Many of these issues need addressing.

  • Work with central government to follow up on contractors within a week of completion on transport infrastructure quality and performance.

    Stop all trucks in the CBD and large supply vehicles in the CBD between peak times, eg not between school hours 2:30 – 3:30 pm.

    Move traffic flow out of CBD and around the outskirts of town. This will also allow a better flow for our emergency services.
