Whangārei Urban General Ward
The Whangārei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Whangārei Urban ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Invite participation and the support of the creative sector – particularly at the community level.

    Invest in leading-edge collaborative community centres with a particular focus on young people and new-comers to the district/country.

    Continue excellent work in provision of sporting facilities, get feedback from different stake-holders on trends and future demands.

  • Remove yellow lines around some of our roads to allow more parking around sports facilities and place more toilet facilities around parks.

    Allow public more access to stadiums and council-owned facilities to hold more cultural events for all to enjoy.

    Look into liquor licensing and make sure all licensed premises comply with the rules and not bringing a negative aspect to their community.

  • Increase the green space around the district and invest in modern creative shared spaces and playgrounds with tables, seating and cover.

    Hold an annual Whangārei festival to encourage tourism but also as a way for locals to engage in a positive environment with council.

    Support Hihiaua Cultural centre in their second and third stages of growth before investing in other projects that cover the role of Hihiaua.

    Support market and community events to bring people together to provide alternative choices and novelty.

    Support developing further public signboards of historic events in certain locations to reconnect and understand our shared history.

    Move towards making council-owned and collaborative facilities free to citizens.

    Reduce liquor sales outlets.

  • Improve funding towards sport to create a more healthy and active environment for our future generations.

    Improve advertising of local events to engage more with the people of Whangārei.

    Revamp public facilities to make Whangārei a more desirable place for people to raise their families.

  • Build a 1000-seat auditorium and culture centre at Forum North.

    Secure more land for future sports fields.

    Provide more boating facilities, both marinas and launching ramps.

  • Allow public facilities (parks) to be used for small groups of education/networking at set times in the week/end with a small booking fee.
