Whangārei Urban General Ward
The Whangārei District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Whangārei Urban ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Improve the cleaning of our streets especially in the city centre.

    Listen to the locals and work together to create a plan to rethink Three Waters so locals can keep their jobs and businesses.

    Encourage households to try a limit their waste and design a system to separate plastics, cans and glass the proper way to limit landfill.

  • Stand against Three Waters to keep our infrastructure locally owned, keep upgrading our old pipework and ensure clean drinking water.

    Reduce dog registrations by 20% for chipped dogs and proactively get roaming dogs off the streets to make a safer environment for all.

    Reduce tip fees so people can dump rubbish at the tip instead of fly-tipping on our roadsides, and make green waste free to tip.

  • Review animal control policies and budgets.

    Improve the recycling programme.

    Continue to upgrade our sewerage scheme and the pipe network.

  • Stop the addition of fluoride into our drinking water.

    Invest in to more green and innovative solutions to keeping streets and public areas free of rubbish.

    Investigate and work with central government in the implementation of fresh air incineration plants for rubbish and recycling like Singapore.

  • Totally against Three Waters Bill. Fluoridation is a done deal despite public opposition. The democratic process has not been followed.

  • Support waste-minimising stewardship by producers. Refunds, reuse, compostable packaging.

    Start a conversation around reducing kerbside rubbish – rotate between waste, recycling, green waste each week?

    Front-foot Three Waters. We've done well – now sewage isn't going into the harbour! But other areas are struggling, let's work together!

  • Introduce/keep the ownership of Three Waters system to stay under the residence of Whangārei.

    Recycle the building supplies from large businesses down to the small businesses to stop large skip bin waste. Reuse. Add a bonus system.

    Do performance dog control on areas of repeat offending. When a dog has been roaming and harmed other animals or humans, end of life.

  • Expand recycling collection types for central city area. Implement systems to deal with public recycling bins and label clearly.

    Improve maintenance in parks and reserve areas, not on a scheduled run.

    Support healthy water along side our neighboring districts, improve storm water, efficient waste water and improving discharge quality.

  • Create an effective stormwater system. Improve the quality of Hatea river

    Increase control of pets in ecological regenerating areas.
