Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

Ensure Christchurch Mass Rapid Transit corridors are designated, protected and deliver public transport infrastructure offering safe mode choice.
Keep to and report on Christchurch City goal of net zero greenhouse emissions by 2045.
Support councils urban forest plan and support community groups in tree planting, gardening and waterway cleanups.
Investigate partnerships where hemp could be grown in Canterbury for use in hempcrete for building.
Review tree and forest policies to ensure that goals are achievable and being met, with visible work, and ensure tree wood is reused so carbon remains captured.
Support residents to install solar and water harvesting by providing independent information and possibly rates rebates or 0% loans.
