Grey District Council

Central Ward
The Grey District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of eight councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). three councillors will be elected from the Central ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Ensure council is staffed to a sufficient level to meet timely customer concerns and requests.

    Ensure council IT is up to speed and secure.

  • Increase rates transparency by providing simple, clear explanations of how money is spent to build trust and accountability.

    Strengthen public engagement by hosting community forums and online collaborative consultations to ensure everyone’s voice is heard.

    Work collaboratively with all West Coast councils to explore amalgamation that improves efficiency, cuts costs and boosts regional growth.

  • Have less reliance on expensive consultants by increasing internal capability and capacity within a well managed council office.

    Investigate opportunities for better alignment across our three district councils for efficiencies and disband the West Coast Regional Council.

    Work in collaboration with local iwi managing opportunities while also recognising the value new ethnic groups bring to the district.
