Levin General Ward
The Horowhenua District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). five councillors will be elected from the Levin ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Grow and protect biodiversity and pest control.

    Minimise and manage waste, bring transfer station back in house, and seriously rethink recycling, reducing and reusing.

    Protect water quality and preservation as already in long term plan.

  • Deliver best-practice remediation of Levin landfill impacts and restore Hōkio Stream to protect land, water and community wellbeing.

    Collaborate with lake owners, Horizons and community to advocate for an accord and action plan to restore and protect Lake Horowhenua.

    Review food scrap pilot results and explore new ways to cut organic waste to landfill through composting and community-led initiatives.

  • Ensure landfill site is managed safely, reducing pollution and impacts on the surrounds.

    Protect fertile soils from overdevelopment and retain them for growing food.

    Restore wetlands, streams and native bush for biodiversity and natural flood protection and plant more trees in urban and rural areas.

  • Advocate for a strong local voice in the governance model of the water services organisation to ensure fair cost allocation.

    Ensure future water supply needs are met by progressing the new water reservoir as budgeted.

    Support faster action on the water quality improvements of Lake Horowhenua.

  • Launch a new Compost First campaign for interested locals and schools to minimise waste.
