Mayor of Invercargill

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Invercargill City Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I believe Invercargill has moved forward very positively over the past five years but capital investment has driven rates toward unaffordability. I will drive efficiency into council operations to fund the next phase of growth. I believe we must let Invercargill continue its forward momentum but must fund internally by reducing the cost of services and of delivering projects. I want to set the objective of being the most efficient town or city in NZ.

About me

I have a strong governance background in both public and private entities. For example, I have been Chair of GNS Science and EECA, and a director of Todd Corporation and Port Otago. I have also been Chief Executive of the Tiwai Smelter. I believe experience in driving efficiency programmes through large organisations is critical if Invercargill is to continue its positive forward momentum, but to do so by internal efficiency improvements rather than by increasing the burden on ratepayers.

My priorities
  1. Drive efficiency through council activities and ensure savings are directed to rates.
  2. Utilise existing assets or unused buildings in the city to avoid new builds.
  3. Develop water service organisation to ensure standards are met fully but at least cost.
