Nelson City Council

Nelson City At Large
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city.) This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Nelson City Council election.

Why I'm standing

Hold a deep belief that, with encouragement, the community can act with cohesion to build local resiliency by connecting and strengthening existing mahi for a wellbeing economy. Promote citizen assemblies and participatory budgeting. Focus on relocating resources rather than requiring new funding. Support collective housing models such as co-housing and community land trusts. Restore wetlands and stream banks. Require developers to have adequate silt settling ponds to ensure clean waterways reach the ocean. Aim for us to be good ancestors, recognising environment is everywhere.

About me

I moved to Nelson 40 years ago. I am remarried and have financially supported and helped raise four children and now six grandchildren. I have been a postie, a firefighter, done jury duty, and ran a successful business for 37 years. I have sat on a wide spectrum of community committees and boards. I am a team player with a love for nurturing nature. I was raised as a Quaker (Christian) to be the best person I can be every day and pay my taxes.

My priorities
  1. Ensure safe, clean water for drinking, swimming and a healthy Tasman Bay. Provide rainwater tanks for new builds.
  2. Raise community wellbeing mentally and physically through education and connection with nature.
  3. Improve transparency, democracy and Te Tiriti by placing nature and community at the centre of the economy.
