Wānaka-Upper Clutha Ward
The Queenstown-Lakes District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the Wānaka-Upper Clutha ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. From parks and libraries to museums and art galleries, councils can be a key supporter of sporting, recreational and cultural events that bring communities to life. Community facilities, including sports grounds and town halls, are often owned and run by councils.

  • Encourage community events, sporting events, concerts and cultural activities using partner share or models that do not increase rates.

    Keep public amenities up to standard and halt new developments until fully costed and attainable without further rate increases.

  • Deliver some basic facilities close to home for smaller communities in line with what they most need.

    Ensure the council fairly distributes available debt across its two main centres to ensure equitable access to recreational facilities.

    Support the delivery of sports fields for the Upper Clutha.

  • Agree a site for a possible arts centre in Wanaka.

    Complete the concept plan for the QEC.

    Complete the new sports field and facilities project on the Ballantyne Road site.
