Transport

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

  • Maintain the roading network to provide an acceptable level of service across the ward to allow safe travel for people and products.

  • Lobby for a fair share of government roading funding that accounts for a low ratepayer base and high cost of production tonnage on roads.

  • Maintain safe footpaths in towns and villages to provide safety for all ages.

  • Promote the establishment of rail passenger links between Invercargill and the rest of New Zealand.

  • Provide free public parking at Invercargill Airport.

  • Work with central government to double the present share of funding for roads as recognition of the region's financial and tourism importance.
