Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Streamline consenting processes to cut wait times and reduce compliance costs for homeowners and builders.

    Support establishing a housing trust in Timaru so older people and those in need can live affordably, safely and with dignity.

    Work with community organisations and housing providers to investigate and deliver new solutions, eg an Abbeyfield House.

  • Allow and encourage denser housing and apartments in the CBD to create a variety of housing.

    Relax unnecessary construction rules such as balcony and lawn size requirements to increase housing affordability.

    Work with new investors and developers in the district to get more new housing built.

  • Create a one-stop shop to help people find their feet in the community, encompassing the fragile and those more able to fend for themselves.

    Encourage homeless people into appropriate jobs and housing, offering each a counsellor to support their journey.
