Timaru District Council

Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Appropriately fund depreciation to mitigate future rates rises.

    Support building a multi-council water CCO to keep water rates affordable.

  • Improve recycling and rubbish services in Timaru to cut landfill waste.

    Keep control of Timaru's Three Waters with local decisions, safe, affordable and accountable to residents.

  • Consider better access routes for dogs to Caroline Bay and, in the open season, consider access to the garden area.

    Introduce street judging and encourage people not to drop rubbish, especially near schools, and encourage police to report tagging.

    Maintain good rubbish collection and explore safer and better disposal methods instead of landfill.
