Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Advocate for the government to trial a return of The Southerner and for the council to support the effort.

    Ensure maintenance of roads continues at a strong level by appropriately funding depreciation.

    Invest in active transport options across the district to create more opportunities for walking and cycling.

  • Continue to invest in MyWay as Timaru's public transport by working with Environment Canterbury and NZTA to grow and improve the service.

    Deliver reliable roads and safe footpaths that support everyday life and local business.

    Support investment in a feasibility study and business case for Christchurch–Dunedin passenger rail service.

  • Create, in partnership with government, a State Highway bypass around Timaru.

    Make the port more active for transporting freight and consider tourist ferry options.

    Work with Air New Zealand to make flights more certain and with government to establish the Southerner tourist train.
