Waikato General Constituency
The Waikato Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). two councillors will be elected from the Waikato constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Investigate and support effective control of pests such as koi carp and opossums with the help of community-run organisations.

    Promote and support waste minimisation and resource recovery from waste products that currently go to landfill.

    Work alongside farmers and growers to promote best practice for the long-term care of the land, water and air.

  • Strengthen work in pest management and biodiversity protection and support the enhanced work now undertaken by the Waikato Regional Council.

    Support actions that improve air quality and the well-being of our environment.

    Support environmental monitoring and action against recidivist offending balanced with educational support.

  • Increase monitoring of natural waterways to lower pollution through financial penalties imposed.

    Tighten biosecurity with more focus on enforcement and monitoring to achieve compliance.

  • Ensure the region is in a position, alongside MPI, to respond quickly and effectively to new invasive species.

    Protect the unique flora and fauna of the region through effective pest management programmes.

    Support restoration projects in both rural and urban areas including community-led projects.
