Waikato Regional Council

Waikato General Constituency
The Waikato Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). two councillors will be elected from the Waikato constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

    Support the retention, development and innovative use of the airports and airfields within the Waikato region.

  • Advocate for interregional transport options to connect growth areas to neighbouring regions.

    Advocate for Te Huia to be a permanent service beyond 2026.

    Support and champion modes of public transport where it is most appropriate.
