Waimakariri District Council

Oxford-Ohoka Ward
The Waimakariri District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). two councillors will be elected from the Oxford-Ohoka ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Address drainage issues, ensure infrastructure is fit for purpose and disallow new development in at-risk areas without workable solutions.

    Continue supporting Waimakariri District Council's Infrastructure Resilience Team, 30-year infrastructure strategy and detailed asset management plans.

    Support a district-wide rate for Three Waters infrastructure so smaller communities do not pay disproportionately unaffordable rates for service.

  • Ensure the community has adequate rubbish and recycling stations for future growth in the area.

    Maintain reliable, safe and affordable drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services under Waimakariri District Council control.

    Review current street cleaning contractors to ensure the community receives value for money and best practice.

  • Promote the restoration of the Cust recycling depot at a new site.

    Promote the value of regular water sampling for private well-owners.

    Work with catchment groups on environmental projects to protect and enhance the drinkability of existing public and private water supplies.
