Auckland Council

North Shore Ward
The Auckland Council makes strategic decisions for Auckland on public transport, urban planning, environmental protection and other big issues. The council provides funding to local boards to provide public services in their areas, and manages council-controlled organisations which provide infrastructure, such as public transport, water and sewerage. The councillors and mayor make up the governing body, which shares governance of Auckland Council with the 21 local boards. The governing body is made up of 20 councillors plus the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in Auckland). Two councillors will be elected from your ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Auckland Council election.

Elected Member Kaipātiki Local Board

Why I'm standing

I am standing to effect a complete overhaul of Auckland Council's core operating practice from one of 'centralised corporate bureaucracy' to empowering the grass roots – local boards, local business and local community – to provide timely and cost effective solutions and to be the leaders of shaping their urban and natural environment.

About me

I have two terms of experience on the local board so I understand the council environment. However I am skilled at critical analysis and communications and I have strong emotional intelligence. This means I can see and articulate both the problem and the solution. I am not interested in blame and recrimination as this is counterproductive. The Mauri, or wellbeing of council staff, community and our environment are all interdependent. Few others bring this vision.

My priorities
  1. Overhaul council's centralist philosophy to one of partnering with and empowering community.
  2. Overhaul council's wasteful 'report culture', and open up contracts and procurement to competition.
  3. Significantly increase local board powers over council and Auckland Transport work programmes.
