Gisborne District Council

Tairāwhiti Māori Ward
The Gisborne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Tairāwhiti Māori ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Gisborne District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe Tairāwhiti is the best region in the world to live, work and play – we have unrealised potential and need to be connected with our communities to release the potential.

About me

I am a single Mama of three tamariki, living on my papakainga in the northern part of the region. Living rurally, I understand the inequity of access to services and the challenges faced daily. I have a strong governance background at hapū, iwi and national level. My passion is community and hapū development and assisting people to live their best lives.

My priorities
  1. Papatuanuku – develop climate change plan for Tairāwhiti.
  2. Papawhenua – develop a fairer, more equitable rating system for multiply owned Māori land.
  3. Papakainga – make building of homes, not houses, more achievable for Tairāwhiti whānau.
