Gisborne District Council

Tairāwhiti Māori Ward
The Gisborne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Tairāwhiti Māori ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Gisborne District Council election.

Why I'm standing

Kua tae mai te wa, our Whānau will be in a position of influence, not only to address the issues and provide the solutions but grow our region to reflect our culture 'manaaki tangata, tieki taiao, whai putea'. I would like to be driving this kaupapa alongside 4 Māori and 8 Councillors and Mayor. It is a cultural shift that can provide real change. Ahakoa Climate Change requires collaborative regional leadership led by Ngai Taua.

About me

I have a commitment to 'equity' whatever the situation the outcome is fair and just – tika and pono. So I contribute to kaupapa that give a resolution or result to 'take – challenges' of the past and opportunities for a better future. I love being part a part of real change ; a tutae free moana, rebuild of marae, Waingake transformation project, papakaenga initiatives, taonga repatriaon, land development initiatives Mahia te Mahi.

My priorities
  1. A tūtae-free moana, the wastewater treatment process be funded by Trust Tairāwhiti not ratepayers.
  2. Infrastructure plans and investments in roading, rail and the port that saves lives and our environs.
  3. A fair and equitable rating system based on capital value and moving in step with inflation.
