Gisborne District Council

Tairāwhiti Māori Ward
The Gisborne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Tairāwhiti Māori ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Gisborne District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I am following through on an eight generation commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Which started with my tipuna Rawiri Te Eke in 1840 when he signed Ae Ra! For Māori and Pakeha to have better understanding, better relationships better communication and engagement which benefit everyone in the community. For our tamariki Māori to have role models in this space. Māori Wards is finally a step towards the partnership our tipuna fought for.

About me

I have lived in Turanga, Ruatorea, Waipiro Bay, Uawa and now reside at Waihirere with my husband and three kids. My background is 10 years in Māori Radio, reporting and research, 10 years in education teaching and writing local curriculum. I currently work in environment team co-ordination and administrative support including planning, reporting, training and milestone achievement. I am extremely passionate about this community and a strong advocate of Oranga Wai, Oranga Whenua, Oranga Tangata.

My priorities
  1. Oranga Tangata provide support and advocate initiatives that promote community/whānau well-being.
  2. Oranga Whenua provide support and advocate initiatives that make a positive impact on the land.
  3. Oranga Wai provide support and advocate for initiatives that will lead towards greater water health.
