Gisborne District Council

Tairāwhiti Māori Ward
The Gisborne District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 13 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Five councillors will be elected from the Tairāwhiti Māori ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Gisborne District Council election.

Why I'm standing

We are the beginning of the world and as tangata whenua it is a historical moment in time that Māori wards have been established in Tairāwhiti. I have been supportive and advocating for this to happen for many years, including a submission in support of establishing Māori wards. This is a historical opportunity to help Tairāwhiti heal where we need to and shine like we should, working to close the disparities between Māori and non-Māori.

About me

I am a sound, rational and good decision maker who puts the interest of what's best for the everybody, including my children and their future as priority. I have nearly 20 years of governance experience and much of my portfolio in that time has been in a voluntary capacity for my community, whānau, Marae, Hapu and Iwi. I trust myself to make fair, purposeful and good decisions with as much foresight as possible, with equally good outcomes.

My priorities
  1. Review our policy on climate change and the forestry industry.
  2. Make the best decisions for Tairāwhiti regarding Three Waters.
  3. Improve relationships with iwi and hapū.
