Greater Wellington Regional Council

Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta/Upper Hutt Constituency
The Greater Wellington Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 13 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). One councillor will be elected from the Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta/Upper Hutt constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper.     Support Election Commission taking over the management of local government elections.

  • Listen to everyone. Provide equitable opportunities for people to share their views and insights encouraging participation in local democracy.

    Lead by example. It is hard to take those in ivory towers seriously, but those who lead by example add much validation to their own message.

    Provide good governance. Ensure governance best practice is followed, that management are held to account, and the organisation is well run.

  • Protect and pay bus drivers ethically. Cancelled and reduced service? Primarily they are the reasons.

    Publicise the regional council's role. Many are oblivious as to how much effect regional councils have on their lives and worry instead about mayors.
