Greater Wellington Regional Council

Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta/Upper Hutt Constituency
The Greater Wellington Regional Council makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 13 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). One councillor will be elected from the Te Awa Kairangi ki Uta/Upper Hutt constituency. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Investigate the need to fast track additional water storage solutions for the Wellington Region.

    Monitor the progress of government's Three Waters and see what the implications are for the regional council (may become regulator only).

  • Focus on core business. Our responsibility is to deliver the basics. Uncertainty over water reform should not distract from our obligations.

    Deliver value. A regulator taking itself to court or pursuing nonsensical litigation does not deliver value to anyone other than lawyers.

    Listen to our community. Our regional council is there to serve our community, not to be served by our community. We must consult properly.

    Enforce city councils to fix their cross connections of sewer and storm-water.

    Enforce city councils to fix their leaky supply infrastructure.
