Mayor of Hamilton

The mayor is the leader of the council. Their job is to promote a vision for the city and lead the development of the council’s plans, policies and budget. The mayor appoints the deputy mayor, establishes committees for particular topics, and appoints chairs for those committees. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Hamilton City Council mayoral election.

Why I'm standing

I want to restore Hamilton's independence as a city and ensure its control of its own destiny. Hamilton has a proud history of being independent and fearless. Let's stop jumping every time the government produces a hasty, silly law. I want to enable a River Precinct on Victoria St and an iconic footbridge across to Hamilton East. And I will stop uncontrolled subdivision going on across our city. There are better alternatives.

About me

I'm completing my second term and am currently deputy mayor. I have shown a determination to get things done and prefer action over talking. I led the introduction of two hours free parking. I'm a former journalist at the Waikato Times and I own a writing and publishing business. I want to listen to residents and with my wife Julie have run Common Sense BBQs around the city for nearly a year. We've loved it.

My priorities
  1. Enable a river precinct turning Victoria St to face the river and an iconic footbridge to Ham East.
  2. Stop uncontrolled, ugly subdivisions that are ruining our suburbs.
  3. Regain Hamilton's independence by standing up to the government on policies that will hurt out city.
