Housing and planning

Local councils are responsible for land use planning under the Resource Management Act, which affects where and how new houses are constructed, as well as the design of cities and towns. In some areas, councils also provide housing to those who need it most.

  • Encourage very high-density housing close to towns and villages but discourage it in the outer suburbs as infill housing is out of control.

Strong action needs to be taken on homelessness in East Coast Bays. There should not be any. Social welfare groups must take action on this.

The local police need to be seen, and get out of their cars and offices and walk the town centres and talk to people. No hiding out of sight.

  • Developing more affordable housing options for the elderly.

Encouraging local housing trusts to build apartments and homes for local needs.

  • Preserve and protect existing urban parks and green spaces. They must not be sold.

Support continued housing intensification where appropriate. There must already be supporting infrastructure capacity and transport choices.

Protect free local suburban town centre parking where practical.

  • Advocate to ensure high density developments occurring where major infrastructure is such as park and rides.

Advocate council to review sediment control requirements part of consent conditions, so they offer adequate protection of our waterways.

Advocate that streetscaping considers the surrounding environment, eg pollinator gardens or community gardens.

  • Listen to you about what council should do about planning. To hear your views, I'll hold online and in-person sessions at local venues.

Represent your views about planning at council, so that you are heard and included.

Keep you informed about what council is doing about planning, so that you feel involved in the process and can hold council accountable.

  • Advocate for the development of council and transport infrastructure to sufficiently accommodate expected growth in our area under The National Policy Statement on Urban Development.

Continue to advocate for minimum parking requirements for developments unless there is proven public transport available.

Protect and enhance our current open and green spaces and identify opportunities and lobby Council to secure more, (ie Piripiri point).

  • Redevelop and provide more affordable and sustainable housing for the elderly at our council's joint Haumaru development in Torbay.

Work alongside local community housing providers like the Bays Community Trust to provide affordable housing for our residents.

Ensure building consent processes are easily understood, and the costs are affordable. Too many complaints about how unwieldy they now are.
