Hibiscus and Bays Local Board

The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board is one of 21 local boards in Auckland. The local board makes a plan for your area and decides on local issues, activities and facilities. It also oversees council services and facilities in your area, including libraries and parks. The local board is made up of eight members. Members are elected to represent different subdivisions within the local board area. Four members will be elected from your area. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Local government is a foundational part of our democracy. But local democracy isn’t just about holding elections every three years – it’s about the day-to-day ways people have their say in the decisions that affect us all.

  • Ensure local board meetings are open to the public where possible for them to create openness.

    Ensure a collaborative approach with other elected members and councillors for the direct benefit of residents within our community.

    I am running with the Independent Locals. We will be accessible, approachable, and available team who is always willing to listen and engage.

  • Work with migrant groups to encourage more active engagement in the wider community.

    Encourage local migrant organisations to apply for Local Board grants to support them putting on things like community events.

    Allow the public to be more involved in decision making and at the earliest stage, particularly decisions that affect them at a local level.

  • Support a Local Government Commission review of the size and role of council, and its council-controlled organisations like Auckland Transport.

    Campaign to encourage more volunteers from the various ethnic groups to become actively involved in community organisations and discussions.

    Insist on independent auditing of council and its council-controlled organisations' internal operations, to ensure we get value for money and timely delivery of projects.

  • Listen to you about what council should do about local democracy issues. To hear you, I'll hold online and in-person sessions at local venues.

    Represent your views about local democracy issues at council, so that you are heard and included.

    Keep you informed about what council is doing about local democracy issues, so that you feel involved and can hold council accountable.

  • Greater concentration on what matters for the people, get out and talk to all residents and ratepayers.

    The role of council needs to be concentrated on its core tasks. And stop wasting funds on pointless projects non-related to council's role.

    Concentrate on core council responsibilities before doing the fancy nice-to-have stuff.

  • Ensure that there is a culture of putting the customer and ratepayer at the heart of every interaction and decision-making process.

    Build an internal appreciation within council that revenue is earned by hardworking ratepayers and expenditure must be treated with care.

    Ensure our community's submissions to consultations are taken seriously and materially impact the council decision making process.

  • Establish a robust communications plan that will overhaul and significantly improve the local board's engagement with the community.

    Establish regular engagement with our migrant communities to ensure all of our residents' preferences and needs into account.

    Commit to improving and prioritising meaningful and regular engagement with mana whenua.
