Horizons Regional Council

Manawatū-Rangitīkei General Constituency
The Horizons Regional Council is the regional council for the Manawatū-Whanganui region. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Two councillors will be elected from the Manawatū-Rangitīkei constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

    Flood protection measures kept up to date with more frequent flooding events both now and into the future.

    Ensure cost effective spending of ratepayers money and delivery of council services and legislative requirements.

  • Investigate true costs/benefits of possible actions aimed at lowering greenhouse gases before committing to them.

    Look at possibilities for reducing council's direct energy consumption; and for providing incentives for others to do the same.

  • Commit to council continuing its programme of initiatives for climate change adaption and mitigation.

    Ensure the council's emergency services are well prepared and tested for civil defence events.

    Ensure the government's climate change policies are implemented in a sensible and pragmatic way.
