Horizons Regional Council

Manawatū-Rangitīkei General Constituency
The Horizons Regional Council is the regional council for the Manawatū-Whanganui region. It makes decisions about managing resources in the region, such as air, water, soil and the coastline. It also carries out plant and pest control, helps prepare for natural disasters, and is involved in regional transport. The council is made up of 14 councillors. Councillors are elected to represent constituencies (areas in the region). Two councillors will be elected from the Manawatū-Rangitīkei constituency. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Whether public transport is the responsibility of the regional or local council depends on where you are in the country. Local councils also own 87% of New Zealand’s roads.

Helping communities get from A to B is a key responsibility of local government, from making sure the buses run on time to providing car parking and walking and cycling paths.   • Investigate what actions could increase the appeal of using cycles and buses, so people feel less compelled to travel by car.

  • Work with Waka Kotahi to improve the availability of public transport across the region.

    Ensure the council supports the Bunnythorpe and Marton rail hubs, to reduce the number of logging trucks on our roads.

    Ensure the council continues to develop cycle and walkways for the benefit of all communities, including e-initiatives.

  • Ensure cost-effective spending towards council bus services to try to avoid having empty buses running around town.

    Encourage central government to improve maintenance and repairs of the region's state highways and fix damaged sections of road promptly.

    Work with central government to make it safer for cycling and walking in our region.
