Kaipara District Council

Wairoa General Ward
The Kaipara District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Wairoa ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Kaipara District Council election.

Local democracy

Local government is a foundational part of our democracy. But local democracy isn’t just about holding elections every three years – it’s about the day-to-day ways people have their say in the decisions that affect us all.

  • Put the best interests of our community at the heart of everything I do.

Create an inclusive and positive environment in council and the wider district.

Ensure that Kaipara's voice is strong and clearly heard in the reform process.

  • Support Kaipara District Council to defund and withdraw from Local Government NZ (LGNZ) and reduce Local Government Funding Agency (LGFA) project debt.

Promote council staffing levels, relative to growth of ratepayer base. Kaipara cannot sustain the six-year 80% increase vs 8% ratepayer base.

Promote one person one vote as the underlying premise of true democracy. All ratepayers have an equal opportunity to stand as a councillor.

  • Continue to be available for residents and ratepayers queries and concerns.

Keep our residents and ratepayers informed of council activities and decisions through my social media channels.

Encourage everyone to be active in all engagement activities, eg surveys, drop-in centres, making submissions, petitions and presentations

  • I believe we have too much local government for the population of the district. We cannot continue to raise rates to pay for a luxury.

Continue to make myself available by being located in the main street and will hold regular meeting times for walk-ins.

  • Schedule meetings for the whole year at regular intervals. Listening to community before considering changes is most important.

Encourage diversity and inclusiveness in public participation inviting representatives of all communities together.

Improve internal operations to provide a seamless service to rate payers.

  • Increase public access to council representatives. Pay more attention to what locals want and less to international policy trends.

All New Zealand citizens should be treated equally and have a right to the same representation as any other citizen.

Funding for local government infrastructure projects should be increased by a larger share of the general tax take.
