Masterton District Council

Masterton District At Large
The Masterton District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of eight councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the district. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the district). This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Masterton District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Concentrate on improving Three Waters infrastructure and raising its performance levels.

Continue with rubbish and recycling service.

    Improve our inadequate stormwater system.

  • Improving and maintaining our infrastructure is fundamental, unacceptable that sewerage for example is being discharged on properties.

Reassess the dog registration fees – compliant dog owners need more bang for their buck here.

Implement recycling stations for all of our rural communities.

  • Lobby against the Three Waters legislation. We need investment not an asset takeover.

Food waste collections to reduce carbon emissions.

Shared agreement to build a new dog pound means we have a 21st-century service, now modernise the tag system and use media to find owners.
