Nelson City Council

Nelson City At Large
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city.) This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Nelson City Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe our council needs to be more business focused. I can bring that expertise to enhance good governance and better value for money for ratepayers. I am also concerned about the current culture in Nelson City Council, which could be vastly improved, valuing what each councillor brings to the table, and supporting our staff in the jobs they do and skills they bring. Teamwork is essential and I feel that is currently lacking.

About me

I own businesses in Nelson, so know what it's really like as a stakeholder. I have a range of sound governance experience. I also understand social and cultural elements having previously worked as a prison chaplain. My career was in people management and development, so I am people focused rather than pure policy focused. I like to start by listening and finding out what the needs are before we make decisions.

My priorities
  1. Support business recovery and growth, which feeds a healthy economy supporting everyone's wellbeing.
  2. Value for money from rates, fair contributions, well thought through spending and use of resources.
  3. An improved ethos of public service, culture and solid leadership. Restoring faith in our city.
