Nelson City Council

Nelson City At Large
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city.) This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Nelson City Council election.

Why I'm standing

While many of the problems facing Nelson are global there is nothing that we do that done thoughtfully and with flair, might not make difference. I believe that with appropriate leadership we just might still have time to become one of those lifestyle and sustainability role models that the rest of the world looks to, to find out what it takes to get to be so thoughtful, friendly, inclusive, generous, gorgeous, creative and prosperous.

About me

Nelson has treated me kindly. Since resigning as head of Tokoroa High's art department and returning in 1977 I have been privileged to repay that kindness as MP, and a six term City Councillor, (four as committee chair). I have also served on numerous community organisations and chaired Arts Council Nelson, the Waimarama Community Gardens trust and my running clubs. I am a Justice of the Peace, and a practising athlete, artist and gallery owner.

My priorities
  1. Timely action on climate change just might win us the time to be as good as we most certainly can be.
  2. Partnering with business, educators, community and individuals, in an holistic response to issues.
  3. Housing done imaginatively is probably a quick and least expensive response to many of our issues.
