Nelson City Council

Nelson City At Large
The Nelson City Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 12 councillors and the mayor. This election is for the three councillors elected by all voters in the city. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the city.) This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Nelson City Council election.

Why I'm standing

I am passionate about Nelson and concerned about the road we are currently traveling. I think the council needs to be locally focused, not aligned with a political party. I am against the current trend to centralize everything. It dis-empowers local communities, and makes those in leadership positions distant and poorly informed. Each community needs to able to decide what route it takes.

About me

I am not connected to any party, I am not against any particular party's policies as a whole. I will look to Nelsonians for guidance. I studied genetics at Otago before traveling overseas. I lived and worked in different cultures such as teaching English in China and helping with earthquake recovery in Nepal. I also have experience at home in New Zealand caring full time for ageing family on a budget for years.

My priorities
  1. Issues that affect everyone such as Three Waters, chronic overspending and rates on steroids.
  2. Deeper issues affecting all areas, the code of conduct, LGNZ, LGFA, secret workshops, CEO overreach.
  3. Rebuilding and revitalizing Nelson for the future.
