Selwyn District Council

Rolleston Ward
The Selwyn District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 10 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Three councillors will be elected from the Rolleston ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Selwyn District Council election.

Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Reduce the cost to deposit green waste at the Resource Recovery Park to encourage less going to landfill.

Create additional dog parks to cater for the increase of canines in the area. Increase fines for those who do not clean up after their dogs.

Increase the number of rubbish bins to the main arterial routes to keep the paths clear from rubbish and dog droppings.

  • Provide strong local voice to the new water services entity, particularly around township planning, capacity, and the urban/rural interface.

Keep the ReConnect project on track, including waste education hub, building materials salvage yard, ReUse shop, and maker/repair spaces.

Seek street cleaning services that collect material rather than pushing aside, which is hazardous for cyclists and pollutes stormwater.

  • Ensure our district's Three Waters assets are in the best condition to service our district into the future whatever entity is responsible.

Continue to support council looking at innovative and sustainable ways to deal with waste and recycling.

  • No to Three Waters.

    Recycle more locally.
