Timaru District Council

Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Reject the Three Waters proposal.

    Look into better ways to deal with recyclable materials.

  • Work to support Waimate District Council with the development of the proposed waste incinerator destruction facility for use by neighbouring districts.

    Support development of a second underground bore water source to back up the current Pleasant Point bore which gets easily contaminated.

    Enforce harsher penalties for those that fly dump illegally in our reserves and riverbeds.

  • Ensure water quality is maintained across the district, with a third drinking water source being investigated.

    Keep the Timaru District at the forefront of waste minimisation.

  • Create discussion around our moral obligation to protect our environment from degradation that threatens the long term health of our planet.

  • Preserve our natural resources to be accessible and available to current and future residents for recreation.

    Ensure water quality is maintained and that water assets are owned locally.

  • Support the protection of Significant Natural Areas (SNAs) which are rare pockets of native biodiversity left in the district.

    Support looking at the drilling of a further water bore in the Timaru district to future proof the district's water supply.

    Look at innovative and creative ways to reduce water wastage and shortage by advancing rain water harvesting initiatives for homeowners.

  • Lead and support the community in waste minimisation, esp. reducing the contamination of recycling and the landfill with organic matter.

    Continue improvements to stormwater management and increase community knowledge to reduce impact on waterways and their biodiversity.

    Develop walkway and wildlife viewing area at Waitarakao Washdyke Lagoon that supports the biodiversity and recreation values of the area.

  • Increase green corridors through and into the city and surrounding towns.

    Place an emphasis on pest control as the country works towards Predator Free 2050.

    Develop programmes to reduce illegal waste disposal (fly-tipping) to keep our district free of visible rubbish.
