Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Continue to develop Timaru as a town people want to live, work and raise a family in, so we attract new skilled workers and retain existing.

    Continue to fund Venture Timaru to promote the district and local economy and help bring in new skilled workers.

    Continued development of the CBD and Timaru district gives businesses the confidence to continue investing in Timaru long term.

  • Encourage strong links between business and education to ensure accessible pathways for youth.

    Encourage job growth linked to biodiversity, pest control and sites of significant interest – kororā/little blue penguins, pekapeka/bats.

    Encourage local connectedness – live local, support local.

  • Encourage council support of rural initiatives as our district is very dependent on the surrounding rural economy spending in the district.

    Assist recovery of the CDB by giving it a general cleanup (fly poster removal, removing trip hazards etc.) and get those tiles replaced!

    Market the town professionally rather than using the same rehashed ideas over and over again. Needs a fresh outlook regarding promotions.

  • Ensure locals are given every opportunity when it comes to council work and consultancy.

    Start a Youth Council to hear their voices in what would encourage them to stay in the district and improve it.

  • Work closer with temp agencies to find and fill the areas most needed.

  • Support the work of Venture Timaru (council's economic development agency) to continue its campaigns in attracting people and business.

    Build stronger links between our Young Enterprise scheme students and partner them with local business to bring their concepts to fruition.

    Advocate Venture Timaru in attracting diverse businesses across innovation, tech, start ups to Timaru district to diversify our economy.

  • Ensure infrastructure remains fit for purpose and able to support any increase in temporary or permanent population.

    Ensure sufficient funding to allow Venture Timaru to continue promoting the district as a place where events for are enabled and supported.

    Continue working with industry to promote the district as a great place to live and work and use planning levers to support new housing.

  • Foster efficient, effective and innovative developments that enable the Timaru district to reach its full potential.

    Create a vibrant and attractive destination with inspiring public spaces to grow and attract local business.
