Timaru District Council

Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Timaru District Council election.

  • Simplify the consent process for some things, eg eliminate the need for a building or resource consent to install solar panels on your roof.

Allow the town boundary to expand to promote a larger population which is currently quite stagnant.

Remove the perception of corrupt officials in the Timaru District Council building department.

  • Ensure sufficient land, contiguous with current urban areas, is available for sustainable development and to enable affordable housing.

Continue the Citytown project and be brave with trials and new ways of moving around the CBD that make it a vibrant destination.

Investigate community interest in further social housing investment if Three Waters is removed from local government control.

  • Encourage fit for purpose land for development under the Resource Management Act, the Building Act, and the Health Act.

Support the provision of high quality housing and urban environments for our community.

  • Establish green areas in the CBD for recreational purposes, eg picnics, pop-up shops.

  • Encourage and allow intensification (including inner CBD living) to allow for more homes within the land already available.

Plan, encourage and enable the development of land to be released for new builds and improve council process to remove barriers to new build.

Explore and potentially encourage other housing initiatives such as social housing or co-housing.

  • Increase the available land for housing developments.

Make sure all council housing is up to latest health requirements.

  • Advocate for the release of land for housing development. More housing supply is needed to cater for a future work force in our district.

Ensure suburbs are planned with the future in mind. Urban sprawl leading to more congestion and travel times is not efficient.

Advocate inner city living ideas and development. The Timaru CityTown project should pursue this idea and support developers doing so.

  • Rezone land to make it available for large-scale residential development to ensure ongoing affordability and choice.

Create a more vibrant and attractive CBD at an affordable cost.
