Timaru Ward
The Timaru District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of nine councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Six councillors will be elected from the Timaru ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Encourage and educate youth to be engaged in civic functions.

    Create visible stories (CBD murals/art/sculptures/street art) that explores all the diverse histories of the Timaru District.

  • Improve public engagement by the Timaru District Council by being more transparent and open.

  • Diverse cultures are paramount to have a council reflective of the community. My candidacy goes a long way toward achieving this.

    Build public engagement and trust in local government by looking at community surveys and feedback opportunities for council improvement.

    Support the development of a youth council to ensure youth have the opportunity to be part of the strategic direction of future.

  • Start a monthly survey to get residents' feedback on council services.

    Encourage open and transparent dealings with the public and residents in general. Minimise meetings that are closed to the public

    Allow each councillor to bring up one pet issue per six weekly general meeting for a max five minute discussion by the others. Just a thought...

  • People are busy, we need to allow engagement in whatever way suits residents. Online social media, drops ins, external council meetings etc.

    Diversity plays a key role in decision-making at council. Diversity = different views = meaningful debate = more robust and better outcomes.

  • Advocate for and communicate clearly the importance of our local democracy at every opportunity.

    Empower ratepayers to participate in local decision making to deliver better services while remaining affordable and locally responsive.

  • Make all council tender decisions publicly available for viewing.

    No decision making to be hidden behind 'closed door' meetings by allowing public observation.

  • Ensure mana whenua are represented and involved in council strategic planning and direction.

    Actively improve transparency and public engagement using technology and taking meetings outside the chamber.

    Strengthen ties with ethnic communities to encourage representation and involvement in local government activities.
