Waipā District Council

Pirongia-Kakepuku General Ward
The Waipā District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of 11 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). Two councillors will be elected from the Pirongia-Kakepuku General ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Climate change poses a huge challenge for communities as more frequent extreme weather events require us to rethink how we live and where. Local authorities are at the forefront of efforts to respond, with responsibilities for environmental planning and regulation, as well as civil defence. Many councils have plans to reduce emissions in their area and are working to help their communities adapt to a warming world.

  • Commit to reducing council's carbon emissions in support of national targets. We have already begun work on this, but more is needed.

    Formulate climate resilience actions in collaboration with community stakeholders.

    Retain civil defence responsibilities at a local council level as much as possible.

  • Ensure that council helps landlords through the process of earthquake strengthening their buildings, should that be required.

    Providing a civil defence network that is effective and has trained personnel to act should it be required. Waipā has trained staff in place.

    Be part of the discussion on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enable where possible public transport and electric vehicles (buses).

  • Help residents and farmers adapt to climate change.

    Encourage and support increased use of renewable energy.
