West Harbour Community Board

The West Harbour Community Board represents your local community and advocates to Dunedin City Council about local issues, including public transport and facilities such as libraries and parks. The board is made up of six members. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Local governments play a central role in protecting the environment, reducing waste and safeguarding biodiversity. The worsening state of New Zealand’s lakes and rivers is a major challenge for local councils, which work with regional councils in the management of water resources in their area.

  • Prevention of litter entering harbour through stormwater drains – specifically through the use of stormwater filtration nets.

    Support the continued success of the superb local conservation work being done here by the Halo Project and others.

    Continue regular litter audits of Purakaunui Beach in partnership with Sustainable Coastlines NZ.

  • Assist the excellent work already done in pest control by ensuring that every household has access to trapping devices.

    Encourage landowners to increase their riparian planting schemes.

    Encourage householders, school and childcare facilities to keep chickens to turn kitchen waste into compost and eggs.

  • Support all initiatives to enhance and protect our marine environment and our reservoirs.

    Advocate for eradication of weed trees and pests which are dumped such as chickens and feral cats. Ongoing possum and rat eradication.

    Educate people on recycling, waste minimisation and composting. With food prices so high, everybody can grow or access fresh vegetables.

  • Work with council on improved indigenous biodiversity and significant natural area (SNA) policies and guidelines.

    Get support and resource for community led and managed pest control work.

    Reduce wastewater and stormwater overflows from infrastructure, control run-off into waterways and cleaner beaches.

  • Advocate for cleaner air around our beautiful harbour, including stopping cruise bus engine idling.

    Advocate for cleaner water around our beautiful harbour, including water monitoring around cruise ships.

  • Support the Halo Project to maintain and extend momentum of pest control in the West Harbour community.

    Support and encourage community initiation to open access to Burns Reserve for public use and enjoyment.

    Encourage council to provide better recycle opportunities, eg soft plastics depots and solutions to accidental rubbish spreading in high winds.

  • Push for the continued prioritisation of upgrades to water infrastructure (drinking and stormwater) in West Harbour.

    Support the Halo Project in their pest control efforts in the West Harbour area.

    Increase rubbish/recycling bins on the shared pathway to reduce waste along the pathway and in the harbour.

  • Involve the public in the Three Waters discussion.

    Better communication with locals about rubbish disposal.

  • Commit to a community consultation process and an information-sharing forum for Three Waters' impact on the district.

    Promote active sustainable pest management practices and ensure support for community-led projects, e.g. the Halo Project.
