South Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the South ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper.   • Continue to support provision, maintenance and availability of social housing within the district and investigate a trust-based model for this.

    Ensure development contributions policies support growth and development which is affordable and beneficial to the community.

    Promote ongoing spatial planning to ensure growth is appropriate, sustainable and supported by adequate infrastructure.

  • Explore opportunities when large developments are seeking resource consent to have community facilities embedded in the plans.

    Resist council becoming involved in land speculation as it is not equipped to do this well.

    Review and improve the consenting process to ensure it is efficient and effective.

  • Allow residents to build and enjoy their land without interference or costly delays from council.

    Cut red tape so building homes becomes faster, cheaper and free from endless council bureaucracy.

    Ensure zoning rules and infrastructure provide enough housing to meet demand without pushing up rates.

    Rezone section of Ashworths Road property to facilitate development of managed retreat option for beach community and actively reduce debt.

    Rezone, consult and develop Queen Mary South land for residential, commercial and recreational purposes and reduce predicted debt to HDC.

  • Explore alternative housing options and opportunities such as public and private enterprises to assist both young and elderly people.

    Review the current building consent process and streamline it wherever possible for maximum efficiency.
