Hurunui District Council

South Ward
The Hurunui District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). four councillors will be elected from the South ward. This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

    Focus on provision of efficient core services and utilities and meeting ratepayer expectations as well as is possible.

    Promote ongoing education in and investigation of improved waste management initiatives inclusive of maximum recycling, glass and bin systems.

  • Invest in water and wastewater infrastructure, not vanity projects or political distractions.

    Oppose cuts to bin collection frequency as reliable rubbish and recycling are basic services.

    Streamline consents and dog registration to reduce delays, costs and fees for residents.

  • Ensure footpaths and streets are well maintained and easy to navigate for young and old.

    Ensure the waste management programme is suitable and has sufficient resilience to support the growing community.

    Ensure water supply policies for the area are fit for purpose and meet the needs of the community.

  • Ensure safe, reliable drinking water and strong oversight of the Water Services CCO.

    Improve rubbish and recycling services while keeping them affordable and accessible.

    Support practical animal control and dog facilities that reflect community needs.

  • Ensure affordable access to local refuse and recycling facilities.

    Support initiatives that provide a local dog park in the best location for all.

    Work to ensure the new water partnership with Kaikoura is a financial success and a benefit to all.

  • Establish a joint Water Services council-controlled organisation with Kaikoura Council to provide safe, compliant water to both districts.

    Facilitate central government mandated glass collection in Amberley.

  • Support council and South Ward Community Board to promptly address local concern about key service delivery below standards of delivery.

    Work to ensure animal control teams can help protect rural farms and livestock with fit-for-purpose council controls.

    Work to ensure the decision made for local water services delivery is activated and delivered with transparency and effectiveness.

  • Ensure the new Hurunui and Kaikoura Water Services council controlled organisation delivers water services compliantly and as expected.
