Marlborough Sounds General Ward
The Marlborough District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also passes local regulations and makes decisions about infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage, and about the region’s resources, including water, soil and the coastline. The council is made up of 14 councillors and the mayor. Councillors are elected to represent wards (areas in the district). three councillors will be elected from the Marlborough Sounds ward. This is a single transferable vote (STV) election, so you vote by ranking the candidates on your ballot paper. Utilities and services

Councils are responsible for a wide range of utilities and services that we all rely on, from rubbish and recycling to street cleaning. Councils are currently also responsible for managing waste water, storm water and drinking water infrastructure – the ‘Three Waters’. But that may be about to change, with central government seeking to shift the delivery of Three Waters services to four new larger entities, which could borrow enough to upgrade the country’s water infrastructure.

  • Actively source markets for the mountains of recyclables that go through waste centres on a daily basis and reduce landfill pressure.

    Encourage central government to establish a cat policy to assist with Marlborough's growing problem with feral cats.

    Ensure that all communities are supported in having potable, reliable water sources and supplies.

  • Invest in water and wastewater infrastructure rather than vanity projects or political distractions.

    Oppose cuts to bin collection frequency because reliable rubbish and recycling are basic services.

    Streamline consents and dog registration to reduce delays, costs and fees for residents.
