Selwyn District Council

Selwyn At Large
The Selwyn District Council provides local services and facilities, such as public transport, rubbish and recycling, libraries, parks, and recreation facilities. It also makes decisions about building and planning, local regulations, and infrastructure, such as water supply and sewerage. The council is made up of ten councillors and the mayor. This election is for the two councillors elected by all voters in the district. The other councillors will be elected to represent wards (areas in the district). This is a first past the post (FPP) election, so you vote by ticking the name of your preferred candidate on your ballot paper. Compare the candidates and their policies to decide who to vote for in the Selwyn District Council election.

Why I'm standing

I believe that the financial performance of Selwyn District Council is unsustainable. The level of borrowing is climbing. There seems to be little visibility around the makeup of operating costs. Many benchmarks within the Department of Internal Affairs reports show Selwyn District Council is at the high end of each metric, especially borrowing and staffing. There needs to be a rigorous investigation and an opening of the books to explain where the costs lie and why.

About me

I am a retired engineer. I have worked for Christchurch International Airport on mechanical systems and three waters, including the design and construction of the Dakota Park development. I also worked for Christchurch City Council within facilities, coordinating earthquake repairs and upgrades. I have created 30-year long-term plans based on asset management principles. As a resident of Arthur's Pass, I have worked with Selwyn District Council on the local water supply. I bring a range of skills to Selwyn District Council.

My priorities
  1. Open up the books to identify operational savings and expenditure referrals.
  2. Review the capital works programme. What needs to be done? Done now? Can some of it be deferred?
  3. Consult wider with local communities to determine their local issues.
